The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced it will appoint a Registrant Council member to join its governing body.

The role comes as Simon Morrow is set to conclude his term, with the successful candidate expected to take office on 1 October.

The successful candidate will join the council of 12 members, comprising six lay members and six registered dental professionals, led by chair, Dr Helen Phillips.

They will be expected to commit approximately 20-25 days a year to preparing for, and attending, meetings, with an annual remuneration of £15,000.

The initial term for appointment to the council will be no longer than four years.

Phillips said: “This is an exciting time to join the GDC council as we work to deliver our new Corporate Strategy 2026-2028, which sets out our vision to be a trusted and effective regulator, supporting dental professionals to provide safe and effective care for their patients.

“What we do matters. We would love to hear from any registered dental professional with the passion and breadth of view to help shape the future of dental regulation.”

Only candidates currently registered with the GDC are eligible to apply for the position.

And applications from registrants living and working across all four nations of the UK are welcome.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to public protection, an understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion, and experience working within a statutory framework. They should be able to challenge constructively, work collaboratively, and hold the executive to account for delivery of the corporate strategy.

The closing date for applications is midday on 6 February and preliminary interviews will take place between March and April, with final interviews scheduled for June.

We are conducting the recruitment process with support from executive search firm Saxton Bampfylde, following guidance issued by the Professional Standards Authority. The appointment will be made by the Privy Council.
